The Jepsen Family, originally from Denmark, called upon their lifelong love of travel, dining out and elevated aesthetics when they designed the new space. Throughout the years, community support has helped grow the small mission into a multi-faceted organization focused on spiritual change. St. Matthew’s House began in 1987 when a bible study group followed a calling to bring food to a homeless population living in a nearby wooded area. We strive for the best business and ministry practices in every area of the organization. In our personal lives, we are expected to live a life that is blameless and carry ourselves with integrity.

St. Matthew’s House works to eliminate the elements of poverty at their base. Our homeless shelter and feeding ministry have opened their doors to countless lives without taking a day off in more than a quarter century. The “Task Force for the Homeless” began gathering contributions of both food and clothing, establishing the mission’s food pantry. The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page.

Since April 2020, we have distributed over 700,000 boxes of groceries, produce, dairy and proteins with weekly drive-through distributions at various locations. This model also afforded minimal contact during COVID as recipients could simply open their trunk and have groceries loaded by volunteers. Naples-based residential and commercial contracting company PBS Contractors has been renovating the building for the new shelter.
