The 8,000-square-foot facility will have 11 private dorms for residents and 28 beds for single women. St. Matthew's House began in 1987 when a group of Naples parishioners followed a calling to bring food to a homeless population living in a nearby wooded area. St. Matthew’s House food distributions will continue to some of the area’s more distant locations of LaBelle, Immokalee and the Golden Gate Senior Center. Also, in the event of a local emergency, we are prepared to pivot back to drive-through distributions. When Hurricane Ian hit in 2022, St. Matthew’s House responded to these extreme circumstances with a massive response. This was made possible with the help of our food bank partners, community food drives, individual donors, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, Community Foundation, church partners and hundreds of volunteers. The public also can help by donating funds and food staples or volunteering. Immokalee Friendship House provides shelter to over 1,000 people and feeds over 25,000 meals each year. Upon arrival, each Immokalee Friendship House resident's needs are assessed and in-house assistance and referrals are coordinated. St. Matthew's House is a part of recovery, not a permanent place to live. Our goal is to equip each person that leaves St. Matthew's House to make the transition from a homeless lifestyle to self-sufficiency. When SMH residents enter our Emergency/Transitional Housing Program, they subsequently submit themselves to our rules and regulations.
