When I first visited Washington House in Basking Ridge, I found it hard to believe the building dates back to 1860. While many guests come in specifically for the seafood, others head straight for the hearty burgers. The biggest change to the business profile came in 2020 during the pandemic. The tent became a real refuge for the town (and many others) during the hardest times of the pandemic. The Jepsen family owns this restaurant as well as a construction company called Scandic Builders. Not only does the restaurant offer a beautiful venue with great food, drinks, and all-around hospitality; they employ happy people and take care of their staff. Washington House has built a reputation for care amongst their staff — not just the guests they serve.
The Cat’s Meow Village
The Cat’s Meow Village is a small company founded in Wooster, Ohio in 1982 from one simple wooden house Faline cutout on her grandfather’s saw in the loft of the hog barn. In 2013, the Jepsen Family became partners with the former owner and at that time, their construction company Scandic Builders undertook the extensive renovation. The Jepsen Family, originally from Denmark, called upon their lifelong love of travel, dining out and elevated aesthetics when they designed the new space. Washington House took back its former name when the doors opened in May 2014. The Jepsens and their staff look forward to reaching the 10 year milestone next year and have great plans for the anniversary celebration.

Since April 2020, we have distributed over 700,000 boxes of groceries, produce, dairy and proteins with weekly drive-through distributions at various locations. This model also afforded minimal contact during COVID as recipients could simply open their trunk and have groceries loaded by volunteers. St. Matthew's House is committed to assisting those who have a home but are living paycheck to paycheck, often at or below poverty level. We operate over a dozen food distributions across Southwest Florida every month, and also have a Choice Pantry available by appointment at our Food Warehouse in Naples. For donation pickup, we ask that all donations be ready, accessible, and safe to handle at the time of the pickup.

There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. In just months, homeless women and children in Lee County could find themselves a new home after a shelter broke ground this week to give up to 300 of them a safe place to land. Instead of offering a box of pre-selected items, qualified recipients will have a choice of what they receive. A recent study funded by the Morgan Stanley Foundation and conducted by Feeding America and University of Chicago included 28 food banks and 111 food pantries.

The first Thanksgiving Day meal is served to the homeless and hungry a couple of weeks later. By integrating faith, knowledge, and community, St. Matthew students will become a person with strong character, an effective communicator, an active Christian, a responsible citizen, and a life-long learner. As director of philanthropy and planned giving, Marquette will help supporters establish their legacy while transforming the lives of Immokalee’s youth.

Naples-based residential and commercial contracting company PBS Contractors has been renovating the building for the new shelter. He added Lee County offers a family shelter and a man's shelter, but there had been no facility that focused exclusively on women and children. We will continue working with our many wonderful partners and volunteers to keep our 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked and ready to serve those needing assistance.

Next, she assumed the role of development director at Volunteers in Service to the Elderly, a social services nonprofit in Lakeland, Florida. According to St. Matthew’s House, an estimated 165 women live in their cars due to being waitlisted for shelter space. On an average day, it’s pretty common to see people fishing or swimming in a canal.

St. Matthew’s House food distributions will continue to some of the area’s more distant locations of LaBelle, Immokalee and the Golden Gate Senior Center. Also, in the event of a local emergency, we are prepared to pivot back to drive-through distributions. When Hurricane Ian hit in 2022, St. Matthew’s House responded to these extreme circumstances with a massive response. This was made possible with the help of our food bank partners, community food drives, individual donors, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, Community Foundation, church partners and hundreds of volunteers. Give your in-kind gifts (furniture, appliances, clothing, etc.) so that your used items can impact the lives of the less fortunate.
The public also can help by donating funds and food staples or volunteering. Immokalee Friendship House provides shelter to over 1,000 people and feeds over 25,000 meals each year. Upon arrival, each Immokalee Friendship House resident's needs are assessed and in-house assistance and referrals are coordinated. St. Matthew's House is a part of recovery, not a permanent place to live. Our goal is to equip each person that leaves St. Matthew's House to make the transition from a homeless lifestyle to self-sufficiency. When SMH residents enter our Emergency/Transitional Housing Program, they subsequently submit themselves to our rules and regulations.

Located in a Colorado Springs strip mall, Uwe’s German Restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside, and, well, the inside doesn’t look great either. But you don’t go to Uwe’s for the interior decorating; you go for the tender sauerbraten, crispy schnitzel, and homemade spätzle. Love that its an actual spicy sausage, cut in half and put on the roll.
